toilet
Toilet n - room with a bowl connected to a drain for receiving and disposing of urine and faeces
My toilet did not function as it should according to the above definition. It did "receive" but failed to "dispose". I am sure many of us would like to deny this but of all the rooms in our homes, the toilet occupies the most significant space. Across cultures, the Toilet is perceived as an unclean space i.e. a space to dispose the filthy waste excreted by our internal organs. It definitely lacks respect compared to the living room, kitchen, bedroom and even its cousin, the bathroom. I've just discovered how complicated life can be without a properly functioning toilet.
It was only a coincidence that I planned to be somewhere else during the weekend that my toilets decided to "receive" but not "dispose". While I could imagine myself living 'normally' without electricity or water for several days, I could not imagine being able to live with a dysfunctional toilet. The very thing that we would do everyday in toilet, no matter how insignificant it seems, is now a hassle. It is a daily activity which often requires a minimal time compared to, say, having a meal or sleep. I mean, in the process of shitting, one could not just shove It into any pipe hole, right? Or it would seem rather strange for a person to dig a hole and squat on the lawn in the process. What would the neighbor think about it?
Like I said, I was fortunate not to be at home during the weekend to utilize the (malfunctioned) Toilet. I got a plumber to fix it this morning, and now it is functioning as how it's meant to be. One who has never been in such a situation would not understand the beauty and culturally significant function of the Toilet. That same person would never understand why I am so elated that the toilet is now fixed. And because of this appreciation, I aim to dedicate more time every day to understand my Toilet and its needs.
